🚀 Opus 4.8 Lands the Same Day Anthropic Dethrones OpenAI
At the beginning of last week, we discussed the possible release of Opus 4.8 and Mythos. Turns out, we (and many others) were right, at least about the former. Because a few days later, on May 28th, Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 4.8.
The model release happened on the same day it hit a $965 billion valuation to become the world's most valuable AI company, overtaking OpenAI by more than $100 billion. The model arrived just 41 days after Opus 4.7, Anthropic's fastest cadence yet.
⚡ Faster, Sharper, Cheaper
Opus 4.8 hits 69.2% on SWE-Bench Pro, beating GPT-5.5 and Gemini 3.1 Pro. The new Fast Mode runs at 2.5x the speed and 3x cheaper than the previous version, while standard pricing stays unchanged.
Anthropic also launched Dynamic Workflows, letting Claude spin up hundreds of parallel subagents for codebase-scale migrations.
🧠 The Honesty Upgrade
Anthropic says Opus 4.8 is four times less likely to let buggy code slip through unflagged. Bridgewater testers called out its habit of proactively surfacing issues in their data, "something other models routinely missed."
It also scored highest on prosocial behaviors like supporting user autonomy, matching the restricted Mythos model on internal benchmarks.
📞 AI Voice Cloning Scams Have Officially Gone Industrial
CNN's latest report on AI voice scams confirms what the FBI has been warning about for a year: deepfake-enabled scams are no longer a niche risk, with one in ten Americans now reporting direct experience with a cloned-voice call.
Losses from voice phishing crossed $2.3 billion in 2026 alone, with most victims too embarrassed to report.
🎤 Twenty Seconds Is All It Takes
Scam-as-a-Service kits bundle voice cloning, deepfake video, and scripted messaging for as little as $60 a month. The stakes are real: engineering firm Arup lost $25.6 million in 2024 to a single deepfake video call impersonating its CFO.
🛡️ The Safe Word Is the New Password
Cybersecurity experts in 2026 converge on one defense: a family safe word. Pick an uncommon phrase, share it offline, and use it to verify any urgent call before money or info changes hands.
If a call slips through, hang up, call the person back on a number you already trust, and report it to the FBI's IC3 and the FTC.
Does your family/friend group have a safe word?
